Hollywood loves sequels. Advertising, well, not so much. But when a campaign is working for a client, it can be pretty hard to pull the plug in favor of something new and shiny just beause it’s, um, new and shiny. If the new Liberty Mutual spots you’ve started seeing in the last week or so look familiar, they were meant to. Yes, the scenes are different. There’s a new song from Hem called The Part Where You Let Go that we commissioned. Check it out over at Hem’s My Space page. Other than that, tough, the concept is unchanged from last year. And speaking of Hem, rumor has it the band is releasing a special CD called “Home Again Home Again” that will allegedly include “The Part Where You Let Go” and two other amazing songs that almost made it into the new campaign but that didn’t quite make the cut.

Responsibility Project, You Are Cleared For Liftoff
For over a year, Hill Holliday and Liberty Mutual have been working on a mutli-pronged integrated campaign we call The Responsibilty Project. It’s an outgrowth of our TV campaign. With its message of personal responsibility and doing the right thing, it hit a nerve like few things we’ve ever been involved with.
TAP Project Boston Set To Launch
Not long ago, Dave Droga of Droga 5 in New York, did an amazing campaign for UNICEF. It was called The TAP Project. The idea was to raise awareness of the fact that 5,000 children die every day because of unsafe drinking water. To help raise badly needed funds, The TAP Project got hundreds of New York restaurants to participate by asking diners to contribute a dollar for their drinking water.


I am rethinking everything. Your inspired creations have given me a new outlook on Liberty Mutual, advertising agencies, folk bands, and most of all, myself. Thank you!

I love the concept. But I hope the first one is still running it has a real connection to all people. Will you still be airing the first spot. I feel the sequel is beautifully shot but not as powerful as the original
Just wanted to say a short “thank you” for creating advertising that is socially responsible as well as emotionally effective. I hope that Liberty Mutual has also embraced this concept and is really using it to change the whole experience of insurance … from their monthly statements to the conversations their agents have with customers. Doing so will make a lasting impression on everyone they interact with and will raise the standard for everyone else in their industry.
These ads are worth watching over and over again. Excellent!

Kelly, thanks so much for your comment. Frankly, I’m not surprised that you like the first spot more than our new campaign. I think the first commercial was so unexpected and caught so many people by surprise with its message of simple civility and doing the right thing, it just made an enormous impression. It’s a hard act to follow. But we feel the new campaign is doing a good job of keeping the message out there.

To be sure, the ads have an air of civility and seemingly embody the principles of “pay it forward” whereas each person, after bearing witness to a “good deed” carries that attitude forward in a way to contribute to another.
Equally true, that the accompanying music by “Hem” is fantastically melancholy, and sentimental. Sally Ellyson’s vocals are emotive, sweet and reflective.
But, the brilliant aspect, by far, is that the “pay it forward” concept is the embodiment of the principle of insurance itself, in it’s most noble form: where the good fortune of one individual is extended to other “beneficiaries” in the community at a later date.
The ad is nearly elevated to being a public service message for the archetype of “insurance” with both moral and ethical overtones. Solid work.

HH & Hem, the commercials and songs are just GREAT !
Today, in the course of my duties, I had occasion to be searching for a five year old “Downs Syndrome” child that had wandered away from her passed out Meth-Freak mommy. I found the little girl lying naked, bloody and face-down in the red clay dirt where the neighbors chained up, yard-dog Rottweiler had killed the innocent by crushing her little throat. That put away, I came home and sought out info on that wonderful new “Liberty Mutual” ad so that I could listen to the beautiful, melancholy music … and drink my wine … and maybe get drunk enough to not remember anymore – at least for tonight. So far so good. Thanks for the information. Graham.

As a teacher I used this video in a lesson plan about tolerance, responsibility, and discipline. The lesson was or 4th and 5th graders. This video is so powerful. The first time I saw it I was crying because we don’t see enough of these good deeds done in the world. I wish I could have a link to were I can see it full screen instead of a small screen.
I love the liberty mutual commercials. It reminds me of the “pay it forward” concept. It makes even my children pay attention and hopefully recognize that there is a wonderful lesson in this commercial. You do one good deed a day and your good deed will lead someone else to do a good deed.
Great moral message….when so little few company’s consider that when making a commercial.
By the way, this is the first time I ever cared enough to track down a company to comment on a commercial.

I just saw the latest installment of the Liberty Mutual Insurance “doing the right thing” campaign. It is the commercial with the woman in a wheelchair going to vote in a driving rainstorm. As an attorney, and a disability rights advocate, this was one of the most powerful commercials I have ever seen!!! Congratulations on really capturing and responsibly portraying the situation.
I am involved with a number of groups that monitor and discuss media related issues. It would be great to get a copy of this commercial. Is it available online anywhere?

I have to say, I agree with all of the comments. Great commercial great advertising, and hopefully a great insuance company. I play the commercial in a loop – I work as a mom in a hungarian lepracy center for HIV infected orhpans.
