Xconomy’s Mobile Madness The Future of Computing?

A packed house was in attendance yesterday at Microsoft’s New England Research Center in Cambridge, MA. The subject, Xconomy’s Mobile Madness Conference – The New Future of Computing. An excellent line-up of thought leaders from various mobile disciplines shared perspectives on what, when, and how mobile will be the future of computing. The “not too shabby” set of representatives included uLocate, AT&T, JumpTap, Skyhook, Nuance Communications, Microsoft, as well as a slew of others.

The conference also coincided with a number of mobile events happening throughout greater Boston for Mass Mobile Month.  If you aren’t talking mobile in March… well then you aren’t in Boston.

Perhaps, from time to time, we may get spoiled with so many great mobile technologists in our own backyard. But yesterday, there was definitely a sense of appreciation throughout the room – as the talks reinforced how fast mobile is becoming a truly viable media channel for consumers, and that mobile innovation is now a thing of reality.

Highlights of the afternoon included an Executive Panel led by moderator Mark Lowenstien, and the “Mobile Smackdown,” led by former Lotus CTO and Lead Dog Venture founder John Landry, pitting the major mobile OS offerings  against each other all in an effort to identify who has the best future prospects – Android won the crowds favor… though WinMo made a surprising fight to win some mass appeal. As expected, there was also much hype, around the impending roll-out of Microsoft’s WinMo 7 product – set to launch later this spring.

While these mobile evangelists shared their thoughts, opinions, and passionate arguments, the consensus was unanimous… we are finally arriving at our time, maybe this is the start to the “Year of Mobile.”
